Stand-up Seminar

10HP'ers discussed how Richard Wright's Black Boy is a naturalistic book.

9HP'ers discussed which film adaptation of the balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet is truest to Shakespeare's intent.

Homework:

10HP'ers: Finish Black Boy (Part One) for tomorrow's class. We'll finish today's seminar tomorrow, too.

9HP'ers: Read Ch.1-6 (January-June) of Like Water for Chocolate for tomorrow, and bring your notated book with you to class!

Don't forget that, in addition to submitting a hard copy (print out) of your essays, you are now required to upload your essays to www.turnitin.com (click on the photo above). I'll train you and give you the required passwords on Wednesday, December 10.

In case you missed or misplaced the instructions. Here they are again:

1. Go to www.turnitin.com
2. Click on “New Users” in the top right corner.
3. Select user type: “student”
4. Turnitin class ID: ___________________
Password: _________________________
5. Enter your email address
6. Enter and confirm your own password of 6-12 characters
7. Continue to create a user profile. Follow the directions on the screen until you are completed. Then end process to log in once you finish.
8. Click on ________________
9. Click the icon labeled “submit” to turn in your paper.
10. Upload your saved paper. Find the file by browsing in the file you have save your paper into.
11. Continue with directions. Once you are finished Log Out!

A Little about Me

I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Eastern Michigan University in 1992. My major was, of course, English. After a brief stint in the Reading and Literacy Program at The University of Michigan, I began my teaching career at Ann Arbor Huron High School where I taught for a little over ten years. In 1998, I received my Master's degree in English: Written Communication. I worked several years with the Eastern Michigan University Writing Project, serving as a teacher consultant and teacher coordinator for the Summer Institute. In 2004, my husband and I moved to Santa Monica. I taught one year at Samohi before I became teacher leader of the H house. Two years later, I had my beautiful baby boy, Calvin. I have been lucky to spend his first two years at home watching him grow! Now I return to Samohi, teaching part time in A house.

A Little about Honors English

The focus of this course will be to create a learning community where you can develop critical reading and writing skills necessary for college and expand your repertoire as readers, writers, and original thinkers. In addition to our core texts (see below), you will select “independent reading” from a list of books paired with the themes of the core literature.

In addition to regular reading, you can expect the following:
•You will keep all class lesson notes in your Reader’s-Writer’s Notebook.
•When reading a work as a class, you will take periodic oral and written quizzes.
•After each unit, I will usually give a test or ask you to prepare a project, give a presentation, or write an essay that requires you to apply what you have learned in class.
•You will choose three or four books to read independently throughout the semester. You will often discuss your book with a small group of peers before writing an essay or completing a project.
•Throughout the semester, you will have an opportunity to practice writing essays in a timed setting, a situation you will face in college; however, most writing will go through a process of revision aided by teacher and peers. Although much of the writing will be analytical and persuasive, some will be reflective and creative.
•Keep everything! You will submit a Semester Portfolio to showcase your finished writing, demonstrate your mastery of the skills, and reflect on the semester as a whole.
